Move over Seafood, Sushi Has Another Key Ingredient - Fresh Fruit
15 Jul 2016 --- Fruit-centered sushi rolls are trending so much in the UK that high-end grocer Waitrose has launched a range that is packed with mango, melon and pineapple instead of seafood.
Frushi has been popular in the US since last year and now the food fashion is gaining traction in the UK as well as trending on social media sites like Instagram and Pinterest.
A pack of four frushi rolls includes two rolls with pieces of melon, pineapple and mango, all grown on Waitrose Foundation farms. The other rolls include fresh mint and mango coulis topped with a blueberry. They are enrobed with sushi rice and coated with coconut.
More than 1,000 packs of frushi are being made per hour at UK-based Taiko Foods, a leading sushi supplier, in the exclusive deal with Waitrose.
Waitrose was the first UK supermarket to sell sushi 20 years ago and last year launched sushi counters in some of its stores nationwide.
The grocer says the nation’s love of sushi is continuing to grow with sales up 10 percent year on year, and introducing frushi is the ‘natural evolution’ of this much-loved Japanese cuisine.

“Our customers love to try the latest foodie trends so we’re sure that they’ll go tutti frutti over this year’s alternative to sushi,” says Waitrose sushi buyer Shaun Birrell.
“Frushi is a delicious on-the-go snack, a great substitute for dessert or even can be enjoyed for breakfast. And for those who fear that it might be accompanied with soy sauce or wasabi, fear not, there’s not a drop in sight.”
