Speaking with FoodIngredientsFirst, Afrouz Naeini, Senior Marketing Manager- Sweetness & Beverage. Ingredion Incorporated. Westchester, IL said: “According to the National Marketing Institute, consumer awareness of GMO, and their interest in non-GMO products has been on the rise and will continue to grow in 2017. Consumers place a high level of importance in having non-GMO options in foods and beverages that they consume regularly, in foods they perceive healthy and fresh, and in products that they feed their kids. Consumers are driving the demand for non-GMO food and beverage options, which in turn drives the demand for non-GMO ingredients in key categories.”
Naeini added: “With our wide portfolio of non-GMO sweeteners, from the zero calorie range to the full calorie range, we help our customers develop innovative products that are positioned to address market trends.”
“For example, Ingredion’s portfolio of non-GMO ENLITEN stevia sweeteners, from our farms in Brazil, enables manufacturers to address consumers’ health and nutrition goals by reducing sugar. And, our portfolio of non-GMO tapioca syrups offers manufacturers the opportunity meet consumers’ desire for simpler food and beverage product labels.”
“We currently carry over 300 non-GMO ingredients and expect this number to only increase in the future,” says Naeini.
“We are pleased to receive additional Non-GMO Project Verification, which adds another layer of trust to Ingredion’s long non-GMO track record and broad portfolio of ingredients,” said Igor Playner, vice president of innovation and strategy for Ingredion Incorporated, North America. “As consumer demand for non-GMO products continues to grow, manufactures can respond with products made from our Non-GMO Project Verified ingredient solutions that meet consumer demand for clean and simple labels and deliver on the sensory experience, including taste, texture and sweetness, consumers expect, with the convenience and performance manufactures require.”
The trend towards GMO-free is leading the US ingredient industry to respond. Last October, Cargill has for the first time taken the step to gain Non-GMO Project Verification for three of its food ingredients. Cargill’s erythritol, cane sugar and high oleic sunflower oil are now Non-GMO Project Verified and commercially available.
Cargill noted how annual sales of Non-GMO Project Verified products have increased from $348.8 million in 2010 to more than $19 billion as of March 2016. According to Packaged Facts, demand for non-GMO products is expected to grow 12 percent annually through 2018. With nearly 2,800 Non-GMO Project Verified brands sourcing ingredients to comply with the standard, food and beverage industry demand is outpacing supply.
At the end of 2016, Ingredion revealed plans to acquire all of the outstanding shares of TIC Gums Incorporated, a privately held, US-based company that provides advanced texture systems to the food and beverage industry for US$400 million. Its expertise with gum-based texturizers complements Ingredion’s expertise in starch technology, opening the door to new texture solutions for today’s food formulations.
