DSM Reports Success for BioSolutions Outsourcing Platform
DSM’s team of dedicated scientists, expertise in proven scalable processes, and state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities provide a one-stop shop for taking products to market quickly.
Jan 27 2012 --- DSM has been reporting success for its DSM BioSolutions platform, which came into operation in 2009. The platform offers custom development and manufacturing services for customers seeking to commercialize the next generation of food ingredients, enzymes, proteins and nutraceuticals.
One example of process development with a customer involved the commercial manufacture of a specific food enzyme. “The process took about one year from the first identification of the microbial strain,” Marloes Moerman, Global Marketing manager at DSM BioSolutions told FoodIngredientsFirst. “It involved close collaboration between our team and that of the customer and a step-by-step approach for the whole project to get an efficient process,” she added. In principle, DSM BioSolutions can serve global customers, but process development is conducted out of DSM’s Delft facility in The Netherlands.
DSM BioSolutions applies over 100 years in fermentation-based technologies to offer a diverse portfolio of bespoke services for a wide variety of food, pharma and biotech applications. These services range from developing and optimizing microbial strains and fermentation protocols to large-scale contract manufacturing.
In the highly competitive food industry, speed-to-market, optimized operational costs and robust product quality control are vital in achieving commercial success. DSM’s team of dedicated scientists, expertise in proven scalable processes, and state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities provide a one-stop shop for taking products to market quickly.
DSM provides a range of platform technologies across its global team. The business’ PlugBug platform, which contains both bacteria and yeast strains, ensures the highest possible expression rate, while its robotic high throughput screening facilities provide automated analysis. These technologies ensure DSM can apply its knowledge more rapidly and efficiently. The step from laboratory to commercial scale is completed in a smooth and optimized way, whereby direct scale-up from laboratory to large scale (>35m3) is done in one single step to keep pace with the industry’s ever changing needs. By working with an experienced partner such as DSM, food ingredient companies maintain close control of costs through access to a full package of process development and manufacturing services.
“True business success,” comments Marco Oomen, Global Marketing & Sales Director for DSM BioSolutions, “is about strong relationships, built through transparency and collaboration. Our project and manufacturing teams are involved at the earliest stage and continue to work closely with our customers throughout the scale-up process to manage technology transfer and scale-up smoothly.”
“Customers seeking to bring productivity and robustness for their target food ingredient, enzyme, protein or nutraceutical product up to the highest level can rely on our capabilities,” adds Marco. “Our expertise in process development for single cell and filamentous microorganisms (fungi and bacteria) is based on a century of knowledge and understanding.
“At DSM our customers are at the centre of our research, development and continued innovation. Understanding their needs enables us to become a committed partner and deliver hi-tech solutions that become the intelligent choice for the food, pharma and nutraceutical industry.”
Extensive experience, know-how and compliance with key regulations are at the core of DSM’s robust portfolio. Continued investment in leading, multipurpose production facilities and a focus on sustainability ensure the business is closely aligned with industry needs and geared to meet customer’s requirements, including Kosher and Halal ingredients.
