DSM and Taiyo announce Teavigo EGCG licensing agreement

30 Jul 2014 --- Global manufacturer of nutritional ingredients, DSM, and Taiyo Kagaku (Taiyo) have entered into a licensing deal, which will transfer the entirety of the Teavigo brand EGCG business to Taiyo. Under terms of the deal, Taiyo will become the sole producer of Teavigo by the end of 2014.

Teavigo brand EGCG had previously been distributed under license by Pharmachem Laboratories, (Pharmachem) in the Dietary Supplement segment and by DSM in the Food and Beverage segments. Under terms of the Agreement, Taiyo will take responsibility for all customer segments, globally.

Speaking to FoodIngredientsFirst, Will Black, VP Marketing, DSM Nutritional Products, said: “DSM has ceased production of Teavigo EGCG due to a change in strategic direction. Previous assets used for Teavigo will be re-deployed. DSM and Taiyo have a long-standing relationship and Taiyo’s solid reputation, extensive product portfolio, knowledge of the market and global reach make them a perfect fit for the Teavigo business.”

He also notes that while DSM has a number of specialty and novel nutraceutical ingredients in its portfolio, “epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) has become less strategic to us”. 

Through recent acquisitions, DSM’s capabilities have grown significantly around its core offering of vitamins, carotenoids and nutritional lipids supported by strong science. “DSM will continue to help customers in the food, beverage and dietary supplement industries to meet the ever-changing needs and desires of consumers worldwide,” said Black. 

During the transitional period, DSM, Pharmachem and Taiyo, will collectively work together to allow for an orderly transition for all Teavigo customers and are dedicated to assure an uninterrupted supply of Teavigo EGCG.

Teavigo is a natural green tea extract made through a proprietary, patented process that concentrates the benefits of fresh green tea leaves.
