18 Feb 2010 --- Old Home Foods has developed a new innovative yogurt called Safflower Power Yogurt for the United States dairy market. This is claimed to be the first and only yogurt incorporating CLA (conjugated linoleic acid) on the United States market. Safflower Power Yogurt is enhanced with Clarinol CLA from Lipid Nutrition. It has all the benefits of yogurt, plus the distinctive health benefits of CLA which include reducing body fat and increasing lean muscle.
Safflower Power yogurt will be available in the refrigerated section of Minnesota grocery stores beginning in early March in eight delicious varieties: Strawberry, Black Cherry, Blueberry, Banana-Mango, Marionberry, Peach, Pomegranate- Blueberry, and Red Raspberry. Safflower Power yogurt will have a suggested retail price of 83 cents per cup and is gluten-free and high-fructose corn syrupfree, with as little as 160 calories.
Safflower Power Yogurt is the first CLA enhanced dairy product launched in the USA which can make unique weight management claims, specific only to CLA. The product is targeted to females and males who want to live life in shape and being fit. Safflower Power Yogurt is about smart decision making – it’s one more thing these consumers can do to add a healthier choice to their diet. The 6oz (175 ml) cup is designed to fit into their hectic and on-the-go lifestyles. By eating two 6oz servings of NEW Safflower Power Yogurt with Clarinol CLA, along with a healthy diet and regular exercise, consumers can see improved body shape and tone in as little as 8-12 weeks.
Clarinol CLA is a scientifically substantiated weight management ingredient. One of the latest published clinical trials with Clarinol CLA in April 2007 in the British Journal of Nutrition, clearly established that Clarinol CLA reduced fat mass in specific locations on the body, such as the abdomen and thighs. The Clarinol CLA supplemented group demonstrated fat mass reduction already after three months. This further supports the existing body of evidence which provides a strong basis for a weight management claim on consumer packaging.
GRAS approved in July 2008, Clarinol CLA is allowed in the following GRAS categories: fluid milk, yogurt, meal replacement beverages, nutritional bars, soy beverages and fruit juices.
In Europe Clarinol CLA is expected to be approved via the European Novel Food procedure by 2010. EFSA is about to finalize their scientific evaluation on Clarinol following a positive opinion by the Food and Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) in 2008.
Clarinol CLA is available in a liquid, a powder, and an emulsion form. This allows a food or dairy company more possibilities to integrate the weight management benefits of Clarinol CLA into different types of applications.
Dr. Marianne O’Shea, Director in North America for Lipid Nutrition states “Safflower Power Yogurt was developed to provide a great tasting and uniquely nutritious yogurt to females and males that is highly differentiated from all the rest of the yogurts in the marketplace. With the recent GRAS approval for Clarinol CLA, Lipid Nutrition was able to help Old Home Foods capitalize on the marketable claims around reducing body fat and increasing lean muscle that resonate well with their target consumers, provide application support and supply a CLA ingredient which did not affect the taste of Safflower Power Yogurt”
