Symrise scales functional flavors at new UK-based innovation lab
03 Dec 2021 --- Symrise has opened an innovation lab co-located at Colworth Science Park in the UK. The on-site resources allow the local application specialists to “decode the market,” create taste solutions that meet current consumer trends and deliver application products that meet customer expectations, the company states.
The site will feature a fully functional flavor lab and space for exchange and co-creation. This improves speed and agility to respond to fast-paced consumer market demands.
In addition, local regulatory knowledge and support will help ensure current and future market compliance, says Symrise.
A boost for bakery, beverages & flavors
The facility offers application labs for bakery, beverage and dairy, as well as a flavor development lab.
They cover a space of approximately 140 m². In addition to the lab, the location will host office space and a co-creation space.
The opening ceremony of the UK facility took place on November 18.With the facility at the Colworth science park site, Symrise will support future dairy and beverage developments and UK bakery manufacturers.
Having an additional Symrise representation in this important location of the British food industry will enable the company to work closely with local partners and serve as an accelerator for F&B projects.

“It will strengthen our local development to support UK food and beverage manufacturers and producers. Also, it will enable speed and agility to align with fast pace consumer market demands.”
Commitment to future of food
For Symrise, this new location represents a key example of its commitment to partnerships with suppliers, customers, academia and research institutions to impact the future of food positively, drive profitable growth, and develop its partners’ competitive advantage.
It represents integrated ways of working in an ecosystem involving several partners, including being in direct proximity to Unilever’s Global Refreshment team. Symrise’s Colworth site will welcome several further partners from the Colworth Science park and beyond.
Symrise business developments
With numerous external strategic partnerships already in place, Symrise stresses it is actively pursuing its expansion with these industry tie-ups.
In September, Symrise revealed it has “bundled and reinforced” its taste solutions for plant protein products.
The German flavor house also recently revealed that the plant-based dairy alternatives segment embraces “rapid change.”
Meanwhile, in June, Symrise unveiled another development; application and sensory laboratories in Dubai. The company invested around €1 million (US$1.2 million) into the facilities to decode, design and deliver taste solutions for F&B brands in the regions of the Middle East, Pakistan and parts of Africa.
