In brief: Sustainability news
Nestlé has partnered with Grassroots Carbon to support regenerative land management practices and remove carbon in Nestlé’s US supply shed, with a primary focus on enhancing soil health and significantly reducing carbon dioxide emissions. Both Grassroots Carbon and Nestlé recognize the critical role that agriculture, particularly livestock production, plays in the ecosystem and the subsequent impact on climate change. Grassroots Carbon works with ranchers to measure and certify carbon storage and monitor and measure carbon levels in their soil. The partnership will measure and certify additional carbon sequestered over 15 years. The companies note that Nestlé’s investment helps defray the expenses ranchers incur when implementing regenerative land practices.

The nine-month course, which will run each year for the next three years, will include events and mentoring sessions on business operations and personal development.

A new report by economists at Teagasc provides an update on the forecast average margins and incomes, which are likely across the agricultural sector in Ireland in 2023. Agriculture continues to face substantial input price inflation, much of it prompted by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Agricultural production costs in 2023 look like they will differ slightly from the high level experienced in 2022. At the same time, there have been significant negative price movements in some farm output prices, which will reduce margins in 2023. This is particularly the case in the dairy and tillage sectors, which enjoyed record incomes in 2022. Dairy farms and Tillage farms are forecast to experience a substantial drop in incomes in 2023 compared with last year. Incomes on Cattle Rearing farms are expected to rise from a low level in 2022.
