04 Feb 2016 --- BASF has globally increased prices for its Vitamin A products by 20% with immediate effect. BASF is a worldwide leading producer of Vitamin A for the animal and human nutrition industries, as well as the cosmetic commerce.
Vitamin A is an extensive group of unsaturated nutritional organic compounds that includes retinol, retinal, retinoic acid, several provitamin A carotenoids, and beta-carotene. Unlike other vitamins, Vitamin A is only available via a synthetic production when used as a raw ingredient.
Simon Strauch, Head of Global Marketing, BASF Human Nutrition told FoodIngredientsFirst about what is happening in manufacturing to cause this price increase: “The industry anticipates a tighter supply of Vitamin A in the global market, specifically for the Citral industry. This is the case for all industries consuming vitamin A. The price increase reflects the global demand and supply situation for Vitamin A in the market”.
Citral (3,7-dimethyl-2,6-octadienal), also known as lemonal, is used in the synthesis of vitamin A. It can be applied as a flavoring, as well as for fortifying lemon oil. Citral is also utilized in perfumery for its citrus effect. Furthermore, it has strong antimicrobial qualities. This explains the popularity of the Citral industry, and the global need for vitamin A.
BASF states that “existing contractual obligations with customers will not be affected” by this price escalation.
