UK Fish Processors Welcome European Commission Proposals for CFP Reform
They also welcome the Commission’s plans to open a discussion about the provision of more information to consumers about the origin and sustainability of supplies from whatever source.
Jul 15 2011 --- In response to the release of the European Commission’s proposals for reform of the EU’s Common Fisheries Policy, Food and Drink Federation (FDF) Director of Sustainability and Competitiveness, Andrew Kuyk said: “We welcome the publication of the Commission’s proposals, and in particular their plans to end the highly wasteful practice of discarding perfectly edible fish at sea. FDF’s Seafood group member companies have consistently been working with a wide range of stakeholders, including an industry alliance with WWF and retailers, to press for radical changes based on long-term plans for protecting and rebuilding stocks to deliver sustainable supplies of quality fish to consumers at prices they can afford, allowing them to reap the huge health benefits from eating more seafood.
“We also welcome the Commission’s plans to open a discussion about the provision of more information to consumers about the origin and sustainability of supplies from whatever source. But changes to labelling must be proportionate and contribute to genuine consumer choice. Fish is a healthy nutritious product that works equally well for consumers whether it is fresh, defrosted, frozen or tinned. The EU is the world’s largest importer of fish and needs to ensure that all products offered to the market meet the same standards and criteria.”
