NAMPA: FDA Reaffirms That Current Uses of BPA Pose No Risk; Calls for More BPA Research
“The FDA announcement clearly noted that BPA exposure is not proven to harm children or adults -- which is consistent with other international regulatory bodies,” said Dr. John Rost, NAMPA Chairman.
18 Jan 2010 --- The North American Metal Packaging Alliance, Inc. (NAMPA) supports the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) announcement to continue its ongoing scientific research and evaluation of bisphenol A (BPA). At the same time, FDA officials reiterated that consumers can continue to use safely existing products that contain BPA.
“The FDA announcement clearly noted that BPA exposure is not proven to harm children or adults -- which is consistent with other international regulatory bodies,” said Dr. John Rost, NAMPA Chairman. “Our members stand ready to help FDA in any process changes they feel are needed to better ensure the safety of packaged foods.”
Dr. Rost added that NAMPA welcomes the opportunity to work with FDA as it develops a framework that allows for a transition toward more specific food contact approvals. While it is unclear at this time how the process will work going forward, NAMPA is supportive of the concept and looks forward to a process that relies upon the best possible chemistry and health science available.
