Takasago Opens New Encapsulation Technology Center with Gala Ribbon Cutting Ceremony
09 Dec 2014 --- Brian Buck, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Takasago Americas, announced that the new, innovative Encapsulation Technology Center (ETC) USA was opened at the company’s Rockleigh, New Jersey facilities. The center is a dual purpose Fragrance and Flavor facility in support of Takasago International Corporation (USA) Research and Development.
In making the announcement, Mr. Buck said, “We launched the activities of our newest laboratories with a gala Ribbon Cutting event, officiated by Mr. Hisaya Fujiwara, President, Takasago International Corporation (USA) and Board Member; and Charles Steward, Ph.D. , Vice President of Research and Development.
Mr. Buck explained that the Encapsulation Technology Center serves as a state-of-the-art laboratory, featuring specialized pilot plant equipment that is capable of manufacturing small scale sample flavor and fragrance batches for their clients. “Our formulation and process development of spray dry products has been elevated to new performance heights with the addition of our innovative Encapsulating Technology Center.”
“For the Flavor Division, the new center underscores our ability to provide encapsulated flavor systems for market segments that include confectionery, food, powder products, savory, coffee and tea products. The sophisticated equipment we are using allows Takasago to identify promising flavors, progressing them through Research & Development and ultimately to scale up and/or production.”
Charles Steward, Ph.D., provided some details about how flavor/fragrance encapsulation and release samples are developed, tested, evaluated and produced in small batches for customers at the new facility. He said, “We have the ability to design new technologies for Spray Dry/Spray Chill and Fluid Bed bottom spray coating and/or granulation processing. We can conduct spray drying formulation studies and provide test samples for our clients with our proven spray dryer systems. In fact, of the two new Spray Dry Encapsulators that are located in the Encapsulation Technology Center, one is exclusively dedicated to flavors, the other to fragrances, ensuring us that there is no cross contamination.”
Dr. Steward reported that each Spray Dry Encapsulator has a 600 gram capability and that Takasago also has a Laboratory Fluid Bed Unit with scale up capabilities. The Fluid Bed is a multi-purpose laboratory device that can provide granulation, coating, hotmelt coating, spray drying and pelletizing processes. “We can produce batch sizes that range from 0.2kg to 12kg and customers can consistently count on reliable and reproducible results.” The new Fluid Bed capabilities are specialized and unique for the technology area of granulated flavor/fragrance systems.
