SIAL 2018 review: Functional beverages, plant-based meats

SIAL 2018, which was held in Paris in late-October, is the biggest global food show of the year. The event was particularly strong in terms of innovation this year. The latest trends around gut health (including kombucha and water kefir) were prominent, as was innovation in the health ingredients space. For example, activated charcoal is a trend that is just starting to take off, while birch water featured several times. Plant-based milks were also prominent on the Paris show floor this year. The meat hall at this year’s event was noteworthy for the sheer number of innovative meat alternatives on display to cater to both vegetarian consumers, but also meat reducers or flexitarians.
