Here we present some of the highlights from the show floor. At the event, we reported on the key themes driving the nutritionals market forward, including trending botanicals, digestive health innovation, sports nutrition and personalization in nutraceuticals. ADM ADM presented various new concepts in health & nutrition, with sugar reduction and protein fortification among the key themes discussed. From high-fructose corn syrups and dry sweeteners to no- and low-sugar and reduced-calorie options, ADM offers a wide selection of sweetener products to meet varying needs for sweetness, flavor intensity, viscosity, glycemic response, particle size and price. Agrana Agrana’s AGENANOVA is a complex carbohydrate source for sports nutrition. Maltodextrin or especially dextrose in sports nutrition products typically offers a sharp peak of energy followed by a quick crash. Agrana’s new solution allows sports performers to be more energized after exercise. “This product is an approach to allow the producers of sports nutrition to use a new kind of maltodextrin or soluble starch to produce energy gels or mass gainers in a more sustainable and consistent way,” explains Leopold Schönauer, Product Manager at the company. “This product is more complex in structure and less insulin active in most applications. So you have a really constant source of energy during your exercise when compared to dextrose or other maltodextrins,” he adds. ![]() Agroindustrias Osho Agroindustrias Osho is a Peruvian company which produces sustainable natural and organic ingredients from the Peruvian biodiversity. Typically these ingredients are ideal for the food and nutrition, personal care and pharmaceutical industries. The company presented its natural and organic ingredients with high nutritional value and clean label from superfoods such as cacao, camu camu, chia, lucuma, maca, quinoa, sacha inchi and yacon. ![]() Allmicroalgae Portugal-based Allmicroalgae presented its newest vegan offerings using Chlorella, including Vegan Sea Crackers. Taken as the largest source of chlorophyll on the planet, Chlorella is the ideal microalgae for detox processes, and also to alkalize and energize the human body. Considered as a high nutritional and functional value dietary supplement, Chlorella is rich in protein, fiber, B12 vitamin, iron and omega 3, says the company. ![]() AstaReal AstaReal presented it natural astaxanthin, which the company tips as “a nutritional approach for better vision and eye health.” According to the company, natural astaxanthin is gaining attention within the eye health category and it is becoming a premier ingredient for improved vision. ![]() Avebe Avebe presented its newest concepts that tap into the trends towards plant-based food solutions. Avebe’s plant-based dairy applications are based on a combination of the company’s starch and protein knowledge to create plant-based dairy and cheeses. “Perfectasol is a potato ingredient that supports eco-friendly food and that is all about climate and sustainability,” Bart Pennings, Global Sales Manager at Avebe explains. “It’s all about the dietary choices consumers make and most notably, the shift from animal-based to a plant-based diet.” Aureli Aureli presented their 100 percent natural ingredients for meat applications, which included red beet, kale and lettuce ingredients. With many consumers opting for healthier meat products, the inclusion of natural nitrates make then more appealing to health conscious consumers. ![]() Beneo At this year’s Health Ingredients Europe (HiE) in Frankfurt, Germany, Beneo sought to demonstrate how the industry can create innovative, sportified food and beverage products that are relevant and appealing to mainstream consumers. At the show, the company highlighted the myriad possibilities for NPD featuring its range of functional ingredients. ![]() Beneo At this year’s Health Ingredients Europe (HiE) in Frankfurt, Germany, Beneo sought to demonstrate how the industry can create innovative, sportified food and beverage products that are relevant and appealing to mainstream consumers. At the show, the company highlighted the myriad possibilities for NPD featuring its range of functional ingredients. Berryceuticals Berryceuticals (a joint venture of Berrico and Fruit d’Or) presented their range of organic and conventional berry powders including cranberry, blueberry and haksap berry powders. The haskap berry, also known as blue-berried honeysuckle, or sweetberry honeysuckle, is a honeysuckle native throughout the cool temperate Northern Hemisphere in countries such as Canada and Japan. According to Jasper Bakker, International Account Manager at Berryceuticals, “The haksap berry is similar in appearance to a blueberry, but it actually has three times the amount of antioxidants as a blueberry, making it a very nutrient-packed superfood.” DayWell Korean company DayWell presented their range of Milk Spreads, which they company offer in a variety of flavors, including Peanut, Strawberry, Chocolate and Green Tea. Dutch Spices Dutch Spices, a producer of herbs, spices, blends, marinades, sauces, chutneys, stocks, bouillons, bread crumbs and gravy, excludes the 24 most known allergens: 14 allergens with compulsory labeling following the European legislation and 10 additional allergens from the LeDa-list following the VITAL standard. Dutch Spices has extensive experience in various applications like meat, fish, chicken, vegetarian meat alternatives, potatoes and dairy. A creatively branded stand highlighted that visitors are “entering a safety zone.” ![]() Evolva Evolva highlighted its innovation in applications using its resveratrol ingredient, Veri-te, and demonstrated its prototype products including a lemon stick, chocolate supplement and a cool water dispersible powder. Speaking to Sally Aaron, Senior Vice President, Health Ingredients and Marketing at Evolva says: “Women’s health is, of course, a common topic of discussion, as is ‘beauty from within’ and we are seeing combinations of products that tap into both women’s health and bone health. Our chocolate supplement prototype, appeals to women especially. It is easy to consume, tasty and it doesn’t look medicated, it can be a snack consumed during the day, but it has all the benefits of a resveratrol supplement.” Gelita Gelita’s latest collagen peptide brand (Tendoforte) offers specific and optimized collagen peptides proven to strengthen tendons and ligaments. With its unique mode of action, this clean label ingredient is especially suitable for the booming sports nutrition market. GNUBiotics GNUBiotics (Switzerland) won the Ingredients category in the Startup Innovation Challenge at HiE 2018. The company is developing a novel platform for selective microbiota modulation, with an initial market focus on the pet food arena. A subsequent entrance is foreseen into the infant nutrition market. The quality of this year’s event was strong, with an initial long list of 35 entries trimmed to a shortlist of 13, who were given the opportunity to pitch at this year’s event. Better Juice (Israel) won the Tech or Service Start-Up prize, while Jet-Eat Printed Food (Israel) won the Plant-based finished products category. Magellan Life Sciences scooped a special Naturex Ingenium award for their brazzein sweetener production technology. ![]() Gold Coast Ingredients Earlier this year, Gold Coast Ingredients developed a new variety of customized and environmentally friendly Smoke Type Flavors that are free from by-products of combustion. The company's GCI Smoke Type Flavors can be made organic certified, natural, non-GMO, water-soluble, oil-soluble, and are available in powder and liquid forms. New flavor profiles include: Hickory Smoke, Mesquite Smoke, Applewood Smoke, Oakwood Smoke, Cherrywood Smoke, and Cedarwood. GCI Smoke Type Flavors can be used in food and beverage applications including sauces, marinades, seasonings, meat, poultry, seafood, vegetarian proteins, coffee and confectionery. ![]() Improved Nature Improved Nature presented their soy-based meat substitutes which, according to the company, “can help all of us positively impact the environment and our health.” The soy meat substitute products are made from sustainable plant-based proteins, which are non-GMO and gluten free. The company believes that by choosing Improved Nature products, will reduce our environmental footprint but while enjoying the benefits and experiences of traditional meat. Innova Market Insights Innova Market Insights presented their Top Ten Trends for 2019. Of particular relevance to the nutritionals industry is trend #2 (The Plant Kingdom). According to the market researcher: “The plant-based market shows no signs of slowing down and companies and brands are greening up their portfolios to attract mainstream consumers who want to add more plant-based options to their diets. For the mainstream consumer, going plant-based is about achieving a healthy and sustainable balance between meat and vegetables, rather than adopting an all-or-nothing way of eating.” Innova Market Insights Innova Market Insights’ Ingredients in Action stand featured a tasting bar where visitors could taste, touch, and smell the latest food & beverage innovations spotted at a range of global trade shows in the past few months. Various high protein and vitamin fortified concepts were on display this year, but adventurous visitors were most interested in a highly unusual black colored and lemon flavored cheese. Lipoid Lipoid presented the new products “PHOSAL Curcumin,” a novel phosphatidylcholine/curcuminoid formulation with enhanced bioavailability, and “LIPOID Liposome Basic,” pre-formulated empty liposomes that can be mixed with a wide range of active ingredients. Lipoid is the pioneering company in purified lecithins and phospholipids, offering natural ingredients with unique properties and health beneficial effects. The products are obtained from renewable raw materials like egg yolk, soy and sunflower. They represent key ingredients for the creation of innovative formulations like liposomes, emulsions, micelles and suspensions. Lonza Lonza recently revealed the global launch of its latest dosage form innovation: Capsugel Vcaps Plus plant-based capsules. The first of the next-generation clean label solutions to be marketed worldwide is the Vcaps Plus Purple Carrot capsule, following the successful introduction of the Vcaps Plus Blue Spirulina capsule in Europe earlier this year. The high-performance capsule shell is made using plant-based hypromellose (HPMC) and water only, without any preservatives. A colorant derived from purple carrots is used to match the desired shade as closely as possible, while maintaining a natural appearance in the finished supplement. Achieving unique visual appeal, the purple carrot color also provides masking capabilities. ![]() Meurens Natural Meurens Natural presented Natudry-Oat 19, a clean label alternative to maltodextrin. The savory oat powder provides texture, viscosity, structure, crispness and prevents crystallization. Its attractive DP1 + DP2 level (below 10 percent) enables to limit the sugar content in your preparations, meeting consumer’s need for healthier foods, says the company. The natural production process and the use of flour as a raw material guarantee a clean labeling: “oat extract” or “dehydrated oat syrup” or “oat powder” instead of “maltodextrin.” Milne MicroDried Milne MicroDried’s 100 percent fruit and vegetable ingredients are ideal for health & wellness applications. They offer tantalizing flavors, rich natural colors and healthier profiles than many other ingredients. With over 20 varieties and select organics, these ingredients have clean, single ingredient labels with no added sugars, colors or preservatives. Available in whole pieces, fragments and powders, MicroDried ingredients are ideal for nutraceuticals, baked goods, cereals, snacks, dairy, confectionery, teas, beer and other beverages. At HiE 2018, the company presented various commercial applications of the technology, including General Mills’ Blueberry Chex and a Quaker Overnight Oats product Blueberry, Banana & Vanilla. Naturex Naturex (now part of Givaudan) featured its SWEOAT brans from the legacy Swedish Oat Fiber portfolio. The ingredient is a unique source of beta-glucans that offer multiple health benefits with EFSA authorized claims, including a decreased risk of CVD. A sustainable and consumer-friendly ingredient, SWEOAT brans can be used in numerous applications to deliver excellent functionality through their water-binding and stabilizing properties along with their excellent solubility. Nexira Nexira launched a baobab product as the company’s latest superfruit. “It combines well with other Nexira’s superfruits thanks to its antioxidant properties and high nutrient content. Organic certified and sustainably harvested in Africa this new ingredient will be a perfect source of inspiration for your new product developments,” the company writes. The baobab superfruit has been enjoying an NPD resurgence, boosted by renewed interest in the digestive health and low GI space, as well its strong potential for use in the sports nutrition market. Baobab – which is touted as offering low GI appeal, a high dietary fiber content and for being rich in vitamin C – has seen annual growth of 53 percent in NPD, according to Innova Market Insights data. ![]() Omya Omya presented Omyafit, an instant drink in sachet portion packaging which combines several specialty ingredients from the distribution portfolio with Omya Calcipur. For powdered drink applications, anti-caking of the powder and good dispersion during preparation are of paramount importance, says the company. Both are guaranteed with calcium carbonate acting as a multi-functional processing aid. When it comes to ensuring an enjoyable drinking experience, it is vital to reduce calcium ingredient sedimentation to an absolute minimum, according to Omya. Prebiotica Prebiotica highlights their acacia gum derived product as a “natural solution to add prebiotic function to your product range.” The product, which is available as a bulk ingredient or as a private label product, has numerous functional properties as an ingredient for stabilization, emulsifying, coating and shelf-life. ![]() Prova Prova is expanding its clean label portfolio with solutions that mask the off-notes often associated with alternatives such as pea protein. Prova specialists have been working on a wide range of conceptual products that demonstrate how flavor extracts can help improve the taste of vegetable protein-based products. This comes at the same time as the number of vegans and vegetarians increases all over the world, while the flexitarian diet is also a popular choice for mindful consumers looking to cut down their meat consumption on the grounds of health and ethics. Rousselot Rousselot welcomed attendees to experience its leading food and nutrition solutions. This includes Peptan collagen peptides for holistic health benefits, new joint health ingredient Peptan IIm, and hydrolyzed gelatin Protake to boost protein content. All these premium ingredients enable manufacturers to innovate healthier products to meet growing consumer demand for effective health supplements or protein-enriched foods. At the Rousselot stand, visitors were invited to experience a 360-degree virtual reality video featuring Peptan IIm, where they could see the ingredient in use on the soccer field. Tate and Lyle Tate & Lyle presented various reduced sugar concepts with stevia extracts. Products included a lychee red fruits juice drink with Intesse Stevia 2.0 and a thousand island dressing containing a sweetener blend including a stevia/sucralose blend with the company’s Hameulsion emulsifier. Also presented was a reduced sugar coffee latte creation. With OPTIMIZER Stevia 4.10 and INTESSE Stevia 2.0, producers have more tools to deliver cost-efficient sugar and calorie reductions across their product ranges, meeting growing consumer demand for great tasting, plant-based products that support weight management. Volac Volac's range of Volactive UltraWhey proteins have been carefully developed using cutting edge technology and specialized industry knowledge spanning the past 50 years.
