The company says its innovative, acid-resistant capsules safeguard ingredients from stomach acid, delivering them to the intestinal tract. The company also presented the concept for a natural colored blue capsule made with spirulina.

Profits up at Lonza Despite Slowdown in Agro Ingredients

26 Jan 2017 --- Lonza has reported its full-year sales were up 8.7 percent to 4.13bn Swiss francs ($4.14bn) but the Swiss speciality ingredients supplier and pharmaceutical company was hit by a slowdown in its Agro Ingredients business. Lonza, which shelled out $5.5bn just months ago to buy the US provider of capsules for the food and healthcare industries Capsugel, said its increase in profits was courtesy of the improved running of divisions with its Consumers Care, Wood Protection and Water Treatment business performing particularly well.

Capsugel Sold to Lonza in $5.5bn Deal

15 Dec 2016 --- Capsugel, the US provider of capsules for the food and healthcare industries, has been sold to Swiss pharmaceutical company Lonza Group AG for $5.5bn. Lonza has bought Capsugel from private equity firm KKR, after it won out in an auction against a number of undisclosed rivals. In recent years, Capsugel has transformed its business model to become a speciality CDMO that designs, develops and manufactures a wide range of innovative dosage forms for the biopharmaceutical and consumer health and nutrition industries.

Lonza Closes in on $5bn Capsugel Deal

12 Dec 2016 --- Capsugel, the US giant which makes capsules for the food industry, is close to being sold to the Swiss pharmaceutical company Lonza Group, which confirmed that it is in advances talks to buy it. Lonza hurried out a press statement this morning saying it had a “strong interest” in acquiring Capsugel, following press speculation about the impending deal which values Capsugel at more than $5bn.

The Clean Label Trend in Supplements

Market data suggests a strong preference for labels that include products that are as close to ‘nature’ as possible and have a short list of ingredients. This strong trend in the food industry is also translating into the fast-growing food supplement arena. According to Innova Market Insights, from 2009-2014 a total of 35 percent of dietary supplements launched in Western Europe had a clean label claim. Despite economic challenges in many European markets, consumers are showing a willingness to pay more for clean label food supplements. On average, products launched with a clean label claim achieved a 26 percent price premium versus non-clean label supplements
