Summary:Due to abnormal weather conditions and the outbreak of an acute mealy bug infestation, tapioca yields in Thailand are expected to decrease by up to 25 per cent in 2009/10.

4 Feb 2010 --- National Starch Food Innovation has announced an 8 to 12 per cent price increase on its range of tapioca-based products in Europe, effective from 1 March 2010.

Due to abnormal weather conditions and the outbreak of an acute mealy bug infestation, tapioca yields in Thailand – a major sourcing region for the company – are expected to decrease by up to 25 per cent in 2009/10. In addition, in the first half of 2010, the El Niño weather pattern is predicted to have its worst effect for ten years in the country, with temperatures of up to 42 degrees Celsius and reduced rainfall forecast. These factors combined will impact the supply and cost of tapioca throughout 2010.

Luc Bertram, European sales director, National Starch Food Innovation, comments: “We are doing everything we can to limit the impact of these circumstances and assure a reliable supply of tapioca-based products. Unfortunately, current and predicted cost increases are due to environmental conditions beyond our control. Our priority now is to provide a clear and early warning for our customers.”
