Vitiva Launches SubSTAR, Natural Oxidation Management for Pet Food

Vitiva, a part of the Frutarom Group, will launch its new SubSTAR line all-natural oxidation management systems for wet and dry pet food, at Interzoo in Nurnberg, Germany, 26-29 May 2016.

Pet food quality has become nearly as significant a concern among pet-owning consumers as worries over the quality of foods they eat themselves. Vitiva introduces a line of new herbal extract formulations designed specifically to tackle oxidation issues in pet foods, and especially in dry kibble. “We’re seeing a strong demand from major pet food manufacturers to remove synthetic antioxidants, and replace those synthetics with natural ingredients,” informs Ohad Cohen, General Manager for Frutarom Food Protection Division. “Consumers expect the best and highest quality foods for their four-legged charges, and this means natural, safe products. The challenge is to provide natural ingredients, yet maintain a long shelf life.” Numerous market trials conducted a performance evaluation of substar and substar Complex products in cat and dog kibbles over a 12-month period . Results revealed that substar portfolio offers an average of 30% longer shelf life, better oxidative stability and increased palatability in cat kibble over tocopherol-based antioxidants in like products. Tocopherols are not heat-stable and cannot provide a full oxidation protection for pet food products that undergo heat treatments. The new substar formulations, as oil-soluble oxidation management systems, offer a complete antioxidant protection even under those same, high-heat processing conditions.

Vitiva’s substar portfolio offers natural, efficient and cost-effective solutions for pet food products. Oil-soluble and water-dispersible, they are available in both liquid and powder form. Substar products are customizable to fit the specific processing demands of the pet food industry as well as its raw material suppliers. Natural, heat-stable, and easy-to-use, substar products offer much greater protection of fats, meals and finished kibble than market-standard heat-intolerant tocopherols as well as increasingly undesirable synthetic products such as BHA, BHT and similar widely used ingredients. The quality of kibble treated with substar ULTRA product is confirmed in an official preference panel conducted over a period of four days with 18 feline subjects, demonstrating that kibble products containing functional levels of substar in the outer palatant layer (Product B), has no negative impact on the subjects’ normal eating habit.
