Diageo revives famous “lost” Scotch distilleries to tap single malt demand

10 Oct 2017 --- Port Ellen and Brora, two of the most revered “lost” distilleries in the global spirits industry, are to be brought back to life in what whisky company Diageo is calling a powerful statement of confidence in the future of Scotch whisky. The distilleries, which have been silent since they were closed in 1983, will be brought back into production through a £35 million (US$46.1 million) investment by Diageo, the world’s leading Scotch whisky company.

GlobalData: Chinese spirits market expected to reach over US$450 billion by 2021

Profits rise at AB InBev, SABMiller merger pays off

28 Jul 2017 --- The world's largest brewer, Anheuser-Busch InBev, has reported its net profit rose to US$1.5 billion in the second quarter of 2017 from US$152 million in the same period a year earlier, before its merger with rival SABMiller. Belgium-based AB InBev, which brews beers including Budweiser, Corona and Stella Artois, said that overall sales rose 5 percent to US$14.2 billion in the second quarter.

Greek Brewers File €100m Lawsuit Against Heineken

24 Feb 2017 --- Independent Greek brewery, Macedonian Thrace Brewery (MTB), has filed a €100-plus lawsuit again beer giants Heineken and its Greek operating company Athenian Brewery following a 12 year investigation. MTB filed the major legal action against Europe’s largest brewer and its 98.8%-owned Greek operating company, Athenian Brewery (AB), in connection with it describes as  “nearly two decades of anti-competitive market abuse.”

Diageo has Thirst for US Growth

25 Jan 2017 --- Diageo has reported that sales were up 4.4 percent in the six months ending December 31, helped by improvements in its business in the US. Overall, net sales came in at £6.4bn ($8.1bn) in the period, helped by a favorable exchange rate. The world’s largest distilled drinks company, which makes Johnnie Walker Scotch and Smirnoff vodka, said sales in North America grew three percent in the period.

Heineken in Talks to Buy Kirin’s Brazilian Beer Business

23 Jan 2017 --- Heineken is in discussions with the Japanese group Kirin about the purchase of its Brazilian beer business. A deal with Heineken would be worth around $870m, according to the Japanese business title Nikkei. Kirin’s Brazilian beer business spans 12 breweries and was created in 2011 when Kirin paid $1.97bn for Brazil’s Schincariol brand.

Mexican Beer Continues to Power Constellation Brands

06 Jan 2017 --- Constellation Brands has reported that its earnings per share were up 38 percent to $1.96 while sales were up ten percent to $1.81bn in the quarter, swelled by the performance of its Mexican beer brands. However, its shares tumbled 7.13 percent to $146.75 today following the results announcement. The share price fall comes amid fears that new US president Donald Trump could raise the cost of Constellation Brands Mexican beer imports by imposing protectionist measures.

Japan’s Asahi Swallows AB InBev’s Eastern European Beer Brands for $7.8bn

13 Dec 2016 --- Anheuser-Busch InBev is to sell a number of Eastern European beer brands to Japan’s Asahi Group Holdings for €7.3 billion ($7.8bn), as it looks to ease completion concerns over its $100bn takeover of SABMiller. The brands being offloaded by the Budweiser maker are its businesses previously owned by SABMiller in the Czech Republic, Slovak Republic, Poland, Hungary and Romania and include flagship Czech brand Pilsner Urquell, another Czech brand Kozel, and the Hungarian brand Dreier.
