16 Jan 2017 --- Mars is expanding its footprint in the pet healthcare market by acquiring the veterinary hospital chain VCA for $7.7bn. Mars is to pay $93 a share in cash for one of North America’s biggest providers of pet healthcare services. The acquisition comes as Mars is looking to shift sales away from its confectionery business-which includes brands such as M&Ms, Snickers and Mars-to counter the trend of consumers shunning sugary sweets. WEEKLY PODCAST: Greencore Strikes a Deal to Buy Peacock Foods in a Bid to Strengthen its US Business

16 Nov 2016 --- Irish food-to-go supplier Greencore has struck a $588m deal to buy Peacock Foods in a bid to strengthen its US business. Greencore - one of the world's largest sandwich manufacturers - says the takeover will deliver cost savings of around $15m by 2019. Peacock is seen as a strong player in the US frozen breakfast sandwich market and has long-standing relationships with industry leaders including Kraft Heinz and Tyson Foods. Other companies mentioned are Unilever, Tate & Lyle and ABF.

The Week in Business (12 July 2016

11 Jul 2016 --- France's Danone is to buy WhiteWave Foods, the US organic food maker, in a $12.5bn deal including debt. The acquisition of WhiteWave, based in Colorado, marks Danone’s biggest deal in the past 10 years. The world’s biggest yogurt maker said it would pay shareholders in WhiteWave $56.25 per share in cash. Shares in WhiteWave were valued at $47.4 at the time the deal was announced, valuing the company at $8.33bn. Other companies mentioned are ABF, Agrana, Barry Callebaut and Bunge.
